California TOWHEE

California Towhees are one of the larger sparrows, with a sparrow’s short, rounded wings, long tail and seed cracking beak but larger and bulkier.

California Towhees have an overall body color that ranges from a gray-brown to a dark brown. But they do have a rust colored area just beneath the tail and another one around their bill, like they are wearing a mask. Other than that, they are rather plain looking.

When foraging, they tend to stay close to the ground, always near the protection of low trees and shrubs.
