HOUSE FINCH

Probably the most common backyard bird in our neighborhood is the House Finch. These colorful and happy voiced songbirds with their thick conical seed-eating bill, are particularly fond of sunflower seeds and small berries.

In males, plumage colors can range from yellow to bright red depending on the amount of carotenoids that they are consuming in their diet. The more carotenoids, the brighter red they become. Females, with their brown streaked underside and plain brown head pattern, are fairly indistinct.
