RED-SHOULDERED HAWK

Smaller than the the Red-tailed Hawk, the colorful Red-shouldered Hawk is a medium-sized hawk with a small head and long tail.  Adults have a rusty head, rust barring on the chest and down through the shoulders to the wrist, and black and white banded wings and tail feathers. Immature birds are brown above, white with brown streaks below and are missing the black and white pattern on the flight feathers.

They love to perch on tree branches while they hunt for small mammals, frogs and snakes. You’ll normally find them closer to water so look for them in areas along Bell Creek. And they do like to “sing” so you’ll often hear them long before you see them.
