rufous HUMMINGBIRD

One of the biggest bullies around the flowers and feeders is the Rufous Hummingbird, who are very territorial and will attack any other hummingbird that comes near. They migrate have a clockwise migration up and then down western North America, they make their way into the canyon in the spring but will be gone by summer as they head to the Pacific Northwest and Alaska and by fall they are heading to Mexico VIA the Rocky Mountains.

Males are bright orange on the back and belly with a gorget that looks dark green until the sun hits it and then it turns an iridescent reddish-orange. Females are greenish above with pale rust colored flanks, rust patches on their green tail and sometimes a spot of orange on the throat.
